Removal Van Brompton Health and Safety Policy
Removal Van Brompton is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, members of the public and anyone who may be affected by our removal services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial moves, packing, loading, transport and unloading of goods.
Our goal is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety considerations are central to the way we plan and deliver all removal projects, regardless of size or location within our operating area.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
Removal Van Brompton will take all reasonably practicable steps to:
Provide and maintain a safe working environment, vehicles, tools and equipment for our staff and contractors involved in removal activities.
Identify, assess and control risks arising from our work, including manual handling, use of vehicles, access to premises, working at height, and handling of specialist or heavy items.
Ensure employees receive appropriate health and safety information, instruction, training and supervision relevant to their roles and the tasks they perform.
Consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage a positive safety culture where everyone takes responsibility for safe working practices.
Review and improve our health and safety procedures regularly to reflect changes in regulations, industry best practice and operational experience.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that this policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed. Management will provide the necessary resources to meet our health and safety objectives and will lead by example in promoting safe working practices.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including briefing staff before jobs, checking vehicles and equipment, monitoring work on site, and addressing unsafe behaviour or conditions immediately.
All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required and report hazards, incidents, near misses or concerns to management without delay.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before removal work is carried out, a risk assessment will be completed where necessary to identify potential hazards and determine suitable control measures. This may include consideration of access routes, parking, loading areas, staircases, lifts, fragile surfaces, weather conditions and any special handling requirements.
Where specific risks are identified, a method statement or job plan will be prepared and communicated to the team. This may include designated lifting techniques, the number of staff required, use of lifting aids, sequencing of tasks, and arrangements for safely moving large or awkward items such as pianos, appliances or office equipment.
Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in working methods, equipment, client requirements or relevant legislation.
Manual Handling and Safe Lifting
Manual handling is a major part of removal work and can present a significant risk of injury if not managed correctly. Removal Van Brompton is committed to reducing manual handling risks by:
Providing training in correct lifting and carrying techniques, team handling and safe use of trolleys, dollies and other moving aids.
Planning jobs so that loads are kept as light and manageable as possible, using disassembly of furniture and appropriate packaging and labelling.
Ensuring staff do not attempt to lift items that are beyond their capability or that require additional equipment or team members.
Encouraging staff to stop work and seek assistance if they feel a task is unsafe or beyond their physical capacity.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our removal services and must be operated safely at all times. We will ensure that vehicles are regularly inspected, serviced and maintained in safe condition. Drivers must hold a valid licence appropriate to the vehicle they are operating and must comply with road traffic laws and company driving procedures.
Loads must be packed and secured carefully to prevent movement during transit, with particular attention to weight distribution, stability and access to emergency equipment. Drivers are required to drive responsibly, allowing sufficient time for journeys within our service area and avoiding fatigue and excessive speed.
Working at Client Premises
When working at client properties, our teams must respect the premises and ensure the safety of everyone present. This includes maintaining clear walkways, using warning signs where appropriate, securing doors and gates where loading or unloading takes place, and being mindful of children, pets and visitors.
Any hazards identified on site, such as damaged steps, loose flooring, restricted access or poor lighting, must be reported to the client and addressed before work proceeds where reasonably practicable.
Training, Information and Supervision
Removal Van Brompton provides induction training for new staff and ongoing training for existing employees covering safe manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Additional training is provided for specialist tasks as required.
Supervisors will brief teams before each job on specific risks, client requirements and safe systems of work. New or inexperienced staff will be supervised closely until they have demonstrated competence in their duties.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly so they can be investigated, recorded and used to improve our procedures. Staff are encouraged to report concerns at an early stage, even if no injury has occurred, to help prevent future incidents.
Emergency arrangements will be in place for dealing with incidents such as fire, vehicle breakdowns, spills, or injuries at work. Staff are trained to follow these procedures, including evacuation routes, first aid arrangements and communication with emergency services where necessary.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable, effective and aligned with current legal requirements and industry standards. Updates will be communicated to all staff and incorporated into our working practices across our full service area.
By working together and following this policy, Removal Van Brompton aims to deliver a safe, reliable and professional removal service for every client.
